Today I thought I would share with you a poem that was written about my home town of Narromine by

Banjo Patterson….

The City of Dreadful Thirst..

THE stranger came from Narromine and made his little joke —
‘They say we folks in Narromine are narrow-minded folk.
‘But all the smartest men down here are puzzled to define
‘A kind of new phenomenon that came to Narromine.

‘Last summer up in Narromine 'twas gettin' rather warm —
‘Two hundred in the water-bag, and lookin' like a storm —
‘We all were in the private bar, the coolest place in town,
‘When out across the stretch of plain a cloud came rollin' down,

‘We don't respect the clouds up there, they fill us with disgust,
‘They mostly bring a Bogan shower — three rain-drops and some dust;
‘But each man, simultaneous-like, to each man said, "I think
‘That cloud suggests it's up to us to have another drink!"

‘There's clouds of rain and clouds of dust — we'd heard of them before,
‘And sometimes in the daily press we read of "clouds of war":
‘But — if this ain't the Gospel truth I hope that I may burst —
‘That cloud that came to Narromine was just a cloud of thirst.

‘It wasn't like a common cloud, 'twas more a sort of haze;
‘It settled down about the streets, and stopped for days and days,
‘And not a drop of dew could fall and not a sunbeam shine
‘To pierce that dismal sort of mist that hung on Narromine.

‘Oh, Lord! we had a dreadful time beneath that cloud of thirst!
‘We all chucked-up our daily work and went upon the burst.
‘The very blacks about the town that used to cadge for grub,
‘They made an organised attack and tried to loot the pub.

‘We couldn't leave the private bar no matter how we tried;
‘Shearers and squatters, union-men and blacklegs side by side
‘Were drinkin' there and dursn't move, for each was sure, he said,
‘Before he'd get a half-a-mile the thirst would strike him dead!

‘We drank until the drink gave out, we searched from room to room,
‘And round the pub, like drunken ghosts, went howling through the gloom.
‘The shearers found some kerosene and settled down again,
‘But all the squatter chaps and I, we staggered to the train.

‘And, once outside the cloud of thirst, we felt as right as pie,
‘But while we stopped about the town we had to drink or die.
‘But now I hear it's safe enough, I'm going back to work
‘Because they say the cloud of thirst has shifted on to Bourke.

‘But when you see those clouds about — like this one over here —
‘All white and frothy at the top, just like a pint of beer,
‘It's time to go and have a drink, for if that cloud should burst
‘You'd find the drink would all be gone, for that's a cloud of thirst!’

We stood the man from Narromine a pint of half-and-half;
He drank it off without a gasp in one tremendous quaff;
‘I joined some friends last night,’ he said, ‘in what they called a spree;
‘But after Narromine 'twas just a holiday to me.’

And now beyond the Western Range, where sunset skies are red,
And clouds of dust, and clouds of thirst, go drifting overhead,
The railway-train is taking back, along the Western Line,
That narrow-minded person on his road to Narromine.

The One Project A Month (OPAM) Challenge Guidelines 2012

The idea of the “One Project A Month Challenge is pretty simple ... To try to finish at least ONE craft project by the end of each month. This can be something you’ve had partly done for a while (a Work In Slow Progress WISP), a pattern you bought ages ago that you finally get around to making up, or a completely new project. This is meant to be a low-stress challenge - if you don’t finish a project every month - that’s fine! We understand sometimes life interferes with our plans. We also realise some projects are meant to be long-term and have a LOT of work involved, like a quilt or a cross-stitch. The main aim of the OPAM Challenge is to give us all a bit of a motivational boost and to give us all a big cheer squad to encourage and inspire us.

However, there is quite a bit of time and work involved in running OPAM, so Kris and I have some guidelines we ask people to take note of AND please only sign up if you intend to follow through. If for some reason during the year you decide you don’t wish to remain part of the OPAM Challenge, just drop Peg or Kris an email to let us know. Please read through all guidelines before you sign up.

1. Participants must have an ACTIVE BLOG. If you change your blog address, drop us an email telling us your old address and what you’ve changed it to. If your blog is already, or you change it, to invitation only, please send Peg and Kris invitations, or we can’t check your finishes list each month.

2. Numbers for won’t be limited for the sign up for OPAM 2012, BUT ... it WILL close on January 31 ... You must sign up before that or miss out on joining in the fun.

3. Participants can sign up via email to Kris or Peg, or via a comment on EITHER blog AS LONG AS it includes all asked for information.

4. Participants MUST provide all info asked for. * Name (first and initial of surname in case of double up names); * Email; * Blog address.

5. Participants MUST have the OPAM Challenge badge on their blog sidebar and link it to either Kris’s or Peg’s blog. (a link with instructions will come with your welcome email)

6. Participants MUST keep a list of each month’s finishes on their blog sidebar and update it BEFORE the last day of each month. (This is easiest if you add each project as you finish it.) If you can put this directly under the OPAM badge on your sidebar it will be easier for Peg and Kris to find it.

7. Only ‘soft’ crafts are included in the OPAM Challenge, ie. Projects made from fabric or wool. Some examples are: embroidery, patchwork, quilting, cross-stitch, knitting, crochet, practical sewing (curtains, clothes etc), long stitch, appliqué.

8. QUILTS: A quilt will only be counted as a finish if it is COMPLETELY finished ... Quilted and bound. Flimsies/tops won’t count as finishes.

9. BOM’s: Blocks that are part of a BOM (Block Of the Month) program will only be counted as a finish when they are joined, quilted and bound. Individual BOM blocks DO NOT count as a finish.

10. If you can email Peg or Kris your list of finishes each month BEFORE the end of the month, this would be appreciated, as it cuts down the amount of time it takes to check finishes for the month. (and save Peg and Kris from getting square eyes!)

11. Lastly, participants MUST ... Have fun! After all, the reason we craft and create is to relax, have fun and take some time away from the “Have to” tasks to do the “Like to do” ones! :0)

Another Journal cover….I have made two journal covers from these two pieces of fabrics….I purchases this fabric I would say 8 years ago…loving the fabric, but never knowing what to make with it…I am so pleased that I have finally used it….I sometimes wonder why I buy fabric and just hang onto it…I often find it hard to make that first cut….

this great big hunk is my number one son and today he turns 29..happy birthday my darling boy….

A few messages were going between my gorgeous friend Lynda and myself over the past few days..…and she was on holiday and was heading out our way…She sent me a message to say that they had arrived in Dubbo…So James and I drove into Dubbo and caught up with Lynda and John for dinner…it was such a wonderful evening, chatting, chatting and even a little bit of chatting…….Lynda and I have been online friends for a number of years and this is the first time we have met in person, I had the perfect day……Thanks Lynda and John it was so good to meet you both……xx

Boxing day…….

Our day started early 5am…we had 29 of my DH’s family for breakfast….10 were missing….lots of fresh fruit, yogurt, pancakes, muffins, bacon, egg, sausages, tomatoes, toast, fruit juices, flavoured milks, tea and coffee……everyone was very happy when they left…

My poor old Mum was not well, so our lunch plans changed a little, but, the baked dinner was still on…..it was just later into the evening, but all good…

I hope you all had the most perfect day …and those celebrating today…enjoy…..

There is a story….two weeks ago I sent these off to my 6 Items Swap Partner Jenny…..they did have a little way to travel but only to QLD…

after 10 days…..there were a few emails…. has it arrived? …no….I was beginning to think the parcel may have been lost…we had all checked with the PO…nothing…………..

it was now 15 days since I had sent the parcel…and guess what.. Tuesday it rocked up on Jen’s door…..(I could not have asked for a better day for the parcel to arrive as Jen did need a little cheering up, if you have been reading Jens blog you will know why…)..

Wednesday Night we had our Annual Club Quilt Christmas party……..this year for our gift we decided we would give a “hamper”…..I was very lucky and received from Joanie a ‘pamper hamper’…..nail files, body lotion, facial wipes and yummy soap…….just lovely thanks Joanie…

Also at our Christmas party we did our wall hanging swap….My partner Jo made this very gorgeous wall hanging which she also designed….the words are just so true….

well this is the birthday girl, my offsider Megan…..yesterday was her actual birthday…

of course we had to celebrate again….

I had a few of the boys come in early and help me with this little masterpiece….

Not much sewing on the “Happy In Quilting” front…..I have been busy working doing that thing work……

But

Last we night we went to a 21st..the young girl who works with me was having a party…and we had to dress up…

the theme was “uniforms”…

I saved all my boys sport uniforms…my eldest son Luke, played most sports, very social boy, my boy, one of his great passions was soccer…..

he was not too bad either, I can say that I am his mummy….LOL…but he represented, the school, the region, and he also tried out for the State team,

was in the Academy, at 14 he played in Vanuatu and then when he was 16 he also went to Europe…I know I am bragging, but I was and am very proud of my boys….

So when a girl gets a chance to go to a fancy dress 21st in a uniform of course I had to go in my sons goal keeping gear (he was a goalie)…

the pants are even padded…I really do not

need any extra padding….LOL..it was a great night….

With any luck I will be able to get a bit of stitching done later, hope you do as well…

I have completed GJ and TTS so I can go onto our next SAL project “Some Kind Of Wonderful” by Anni Downs…

I have mentioned before I have a bit of a problem with kits….I still have a few laying around…this little selection is one of those…

I am thinking I might use these fabrics…..What do you think….??????

I have joined the “Under The Mulberry Club “…..each month you receive a new project by a different designer….….

these are the first two…I have just started the top one…

I also joined this Club last year, great way to received some different projects….
